In the next few weeks, I'm planning to buy a Mac Pro to replace my desktop pc. I will be running Photoshop, Final Cut X, and more on Lion & Visual Studio 10 in Windows 7 on the VM.
Ideally I'd run in Unity mode, but Fusion has always felt a bit slugish - especially in Unity mode (even on a high end MacBook Pro).
My question is, what is the bottleneck for fusion? Disk IO? Processor speed? Number of processors? RAM?
Here's the setup I'm considering:
- Two 2.4GHz Quad Core Mac Pro
- 24GB Ram
- 2 Solid State Drives Raid 0 (OS & data on same drive)
- 1 TB Drive (Time Machine Backup)
Do two quads help or should I up the processor speed?
Would it be better to not raid the drives & use one for data, one for OS?
Do you typically put the VM on your "data" drive or your "OS" drive?
I'd love any advice.
