Hello,
So that I could learn this stuff better, a friend let me borrow some equipment, which I used to setup a little lab. I have setup vSphere with 2 hosts, shared storage (OpenFiler), and another physical CIFS server. I have setup VDR, and VM backups are working.
I tried migrating (a.k.a. Storage vMotion) a VM to another LUN, but it indicated that the VM couldn't be migrated while snapshots existed. I looked at Snapshot Manager, and I saw a snapshot called something like "__data recovery__". OK, a snapshot exists, so I did a "Delete All" on the snapshots, and tried to move it again, but still issues... I'm guessing that I shouldn't have removed the snapshot, and per a KB article, I ended up having to Clone the VM in order to correct the issues with the snapshot files.
So, my questions are:
1) Did I attempt to migrate a VM incorrectly?
2) Should I be able to migrate a VM on a system that is being backed up with VDR?
3) Is there any harm in deleting the "__data recovery__" snapshots? (I assumed that VDR would just recreate them)
4) What is the "proper" way to migrate a VM to another VMFS volume that is being backed up by VDR?
VDR seems like a really helpful/nice product, but if I can't migrate VMs, then that seems like a MAJOR limitation, which is why I think I did something wrong.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated...
Thank you in advance.
