Difference between how WS 7 and 8 allocate memory on (64bit) linux hosts?

Hi,

I use munin to monitor, amongst other, the memory usage of my PC running VMware and I noticed a big difference in the memory graph since upgrading from WS7 to WS8. Under WS7 all memory allocated to guest would be accounted under "apps", but with WS8 it's under "mapped".

You can clearly see the change after the upgrade I did in the evening of Sat 10. The green "apps" area is no longer affected by starting/stopping VMs, instead it's the dark orange "mapped". (And the amount with which it goes up/down corresponds to the amount of virtual memory allocated to VMs I start/stop.)

There's no problem here or anything. Just interested and wondering if anyone has any insight. Is there something fundamentally different in how WS7 vs WS8 allocate host memory? Or is it related to some setting that changed default value?

Regards,

Mark.
