since upgrading to ESXi5 (free version) i get the following error when using theroedthick files as target:

Unable to reserve space: The specified feature is not supported by this version. The disk will be created as 'Thin'.

And its progress always only goes up to 95% on all vmdk's

- is this a known restriction on free esxi5?

- if yes is there anything i can do except from using thin format or buying a license?

if i would use thin format:

- would i still be able to register the backup on a esxi host and start from it (directly from the persistant mounted nfs)?

- can i change back from thin to zeroedthick format on restore using  ghettoVCB-restore?

i use a persistent nfs mount on a synology ds1010+ as backup target with asynchron modus.

interesting: even that my vmdk's are different in size (50GB and 100GB) the clone fails the same way and can be reproduced on every try.

I've tried just about everything that's recommended on the Internet for this error but still getting "error 1935" 0x800736fd when installing 5.0 Update 1a. Each time I run as Administrator and get the same error.

Things I've tried:

• Installed all Windows updates including .NET
  
• Ran setup.exe instead of autorun
  
• Verified 'COM+ System Application' and 'Distributed Transaction Coordinator' services are running
  
• Ran 'regsvr32 mfc90.dll' fails (VMware KB 1037872)
  
• Installed Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable (VMware KB 1037872)
  
• Disabled Microsoft .NET Framework services
  

Not sure what else to try.

I plan to migrate my esx4.0 vSphere production environment to esxi 5 environment (new hardware). How do I migrate my production vms which are hosted on esx 4.0 (3 hosts managed by vcenter) on to the new hardware ie 3 new hosts running esxi5? I would like to leave my production environment intact as is in case I need to roll back due to issues if at all possible? I am aware that of this:

installed the viewer on my windows 7 system, created a vhd with XPpro but my usb thumbnail drive does not register thought it might be "unity mode" but that option is greyed out.

I'm currently running Data Recovery v 2.0.0.50

When I try to run a backup of a vm from a datastore to my backup datastore(which is a nfs share), I get the error "Trouble reading files, error - 3956".

Does anyone have any answers for this?

I've seen some posts station making sure you have proper permissions, which I have gone as far as giving permissions to Everyone to see if this would be the problem.  I've also seen it was an issue with VSS which I have checked all of those settings.

I'm at the point I want to pull my hair out!!!

I have been using a  VM for a while now. Recently when trying to make some room on my drive I noticed that there seems to be snapshots that take a lot of space. These snapshot do not appear in the snapshot manager! Can anyone help me get rid of this without messing the VM?

I have replaced certificates for vCenter Server 4.1 u1 and Update Manager according to the instructions but anyway our security scanner shows me on port 9087 a certificate from VMware Inc.

Any idea why?

Trying to change the Backup Folder Location (View Configuration/Servers/View Connection Servers/Edit.  When I click on the Backup Tab, the Folder Location is Greyed Out.  It is currently backing up fine to C:\ProgramData\VMWare\VDM\backups, so there is no backup problem.  I just can't change the path it is backing up to.  Do I have to shutdown a service to change the path??

I have a PFsense VM that has 2 virtual adapters. One in NAT mode and  another in a Custom mode, I edited the Networking configuration and added a custom network "vmnet2", I have another VM that its strictly bridged. It works fine bridged but whenever I have PFsense booted BEFORE my strictly bridged VM, it will somehow get DHCP from the PFsense VM. I have no idea how this is possible, I usally have to edit all my VMs .vmx files before they can even talk to the PFsense VM. The bridged VM's .vmx is configured to be in bridged mode only.. idk what the deal is.. I will post my Networking configuration file aswell as my PFsense .vmx and my bridged VM vmx files.. ANY help is GREATLY appreciated, Thank You.

How can  I can format the output to divide by a number?

For instance, often time the space displays as bytes, I always have to manually to divide them by 1024^3 to make it look friendly.

Example below...

I am using the API call vm.getGuest().getIpAddress() to retrieve the IP from the VM. However this does not work if no activiy has been going on in the VM for about 5 mins and above.

I thought it was because of the power saving options in Ubuntu, so I disabled ACPI and APM. This did not solve the issue.

I do see the command vm.getGuest().getIpAddress() being issue because the vSphere client does show me the task as complete.

Any clue?

I am building a new sql server for a medium size environment and I am wondering what the memory and CPU recommendations are for a seperate SQL server.

I am using Windows 7, running VMWare 8 Workstation. The Windows 7 machine is dual-booted with Ubuntu. I have set it up so that VMWare in Windows 7 can boot the physical partition storing Ubuntu as if it were a VM. When I power on the partition from VMWare, other VM's will no longer accept keyboard/mouse input, but they are not frozen. The screen savers will still appear. What is causing the other VM's to no longer accept input when powering on a physical partition from within VMWare?

We have a working hardware infrastructure running up to ESX 3.5 & ESX 4.1 successfully.

The physical set up is a six way aggregated port channel and the links are in tagged mode.

Under versions up to 4.1 the aggregated link sets up correctly, all six members come active, and the VMhost behaviour is as expected.

We have not been unable to make for ESXi 4.1 or ESXi 5 operate in the same network environment.

The aggregated channel does not seem to set up correctly.However, with single PNIC it is working perfect.

The configuration of the Cisco switch remains exactly as the set up that functions with ESX.

(we are attempting to deploy ESXi on the same hardware as previousley supported ESX)

We have tried various configurations of the vSwitch configuration without sucess.

The published specification for ESXi suggests that it supports an aggregated link

We have explored on the forums and VMware websites and bit confused whether one of the below choice is required to have vSphere5 hosts support aggregation?

1. Purchase a "Cisco Nexus 1000V" API to enable this fuctionality

or

2. Upgrade our layer2 switches with "Cisco Nexus 1000V Series Switches"

I use PCNS 3.0.1 on Vsphere ESXi 5.0.1 and VMA to shutdown the VM's and the host in case of a power outage. Last week I upgraded VMA 5.0.0 to the latest version 5.0.0.1 (not really an upgrade, but a fresh install). Unfortunately the automatic shutdown doesn't work anymore.

When I run the shutdown script, it seems the relevant ESXi host can't be find or it isn't being managed by the VMA. Then I tried a complete fresh install of all components, but the problem stays.

Anybody who recognizes this problem? Solution for now is to stick with VMA 5.0.0
