How does one get any VM to see the graphics hardware?

Environment:

1. I am using an HP Pavilion dv8327us laptop computer that is equiped with an nVidia GeForce Go 7600 graphics adapter.

2. I am running VMWare Workstation 7.x

3. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 as a VM.

4. I am running Windows XP Pro SP3 as the host machine.

Situation:

1. The VM does not seem to be able to make use of the advanced features of the graphics adapter.

2. The VM sees the graphics card as being an SVGA II adapter.

3. The VM cannot seem to determine the screen refresh rate of the system's LCD.

4. The VM cannot seem to make use of an externally attached display.

Failed workarounds:

1. An attempt to resolve this matter by installing the latest nvidia graphics adapter driver 260.19.44 failed. The installation of that driver resulted in an error message stating that no supported hardware could be detected. The conclusion that I draw from this is that whatever or however the VM emulates the system's graphics adapter is not completely identical to what is being emulated.

Question:

1. Is is incorrect to think that one could install graphics adapter drivers in a VM and in turn expect the VM to see the graphics adapter the same way that the host machine does? If yes, then how does one do it?

2. Is there a way for a VM to make use of an external display?

Thank you.
