From the editors Virtual Desk
Hi everyone, well after a shorter newsletter last week this week is a bumper edition for you. Loads of news from VMware and our partners and customers which I hope you enjoy reading.

For our TAM customers in Brisbane we will be running one of our regular TAM Tech Sessions on Friday. This session is on PowerCLI and is something I have wanted to do a session on for a while. I see PowerCLI used extensively in many of my customers and I often provide scripts and solutions in the newsletter. I thought it would be a great idea to get more in depth with the solution so this will be the opportunity. If you are in Brisbane and a TAM customer you would have received my invite, please register using the link in the invite and let me know if you have any issues.

This is such a big issue but there is definitely something for everyone. Please take some time to check the entire newsletter and of course the KB Digest at the end to ensure you don’t have any potential issues you need to take care of. Of course you can always discuss anything in the newsletter with your TAM.

Have a great week everyone and enjoy the newsletter.

Warm Wishes

VMware ThinApp Blog: Internet Explorer and Default Folder Isolations
Have you ever wondered why some folders such as Favorites are not automatically isolated?
Well, we're here to answer this!
The Basics - A Refresher Course:
To explain why this is, we must take a step backwards and look at how ThinApp decides to set folder isolations.
Note: For more on how Folder Isolations work, see Peter Björk's excellent "Isolation Modes Explained" video.

VMware ThinApp Blog: Using a VB Script to Time-Bomb a ThinApp Package
Ever wonder how one could use a VB Script to Time-Bomb a ThinApp package? Well, awhile back this was discussed in the Scripting Within ThinApp session of the ThinApp Bootcamp Series! Here's how it's done!
Script Info:
Basically, the way the script works is by looking at the ThinApp data container date/time stamp and comparing it to the date/time of the system. While this is not infallible, it does give Administrators some control as this would essentially force a user to need the ability to change their system time.

VMware vSphere Blog: Uniquely Identifying Virtual Machines in vSphere and vCloud Part 2: Technical
In Part 1 of this article, I provide an overview of how to uniquely identify a virtual machine in both a vSphere vCenter and vCloud Director environment. In this article, we will look at an example environment and show you how to extract the information needed to uniquely identify a VM using both the vSphere API and vCloud API.
vSphere
We will begin by just looking at a vSphere environment (no vCloud Director). In the screenshot below, we have two different vCenter Servers (westcoast-vcenter and eastcoast-vcenter) and they are managing a single ESXi host each with a single VM.

VMware vSphere Blog: Disable ballooning?
During Partner Exchange I've had multiple discussions about disabling ballooning, specifically about the recommendation of disabling ballooning when running particular workloads such as SQL and Oracle.  The goal of this recommendation usually is to stop the VMkernel from reclaiming memory but unfortunately this will not happen. This article describes why ballooning is helpful and how to achieve your goals by utilizing other resource management settings.

VMware vSphere Blog: Introduction to the vSphere API Part 2: Object Model
Introduction to the vSphere API Part 1: Overview
In Part 1 of the series, we provided an overview to the vSphere API. In this article, we will explore the vSphere Object Model.
Overview
In order to retrieve properties, perform operations or modify entities within the vSphere API, it is important to understand the vSphere Object Model’s structure and relationships. The vSphere API consists of three types of objects:

VMware vSphere Blog: Physical RDM to VMDK Migration Feature
A short while back, I wrote a post on RDMs, and their behaviour when involved in migrations. I had someone reach out to me about this post, and highlight another behaviour which I missed in the previous blog posting. First, one needs to understand the settings for a pRDM when it is attached to the VM. Looking at the entries in the VM's vmx file, this is what we see:
scsi0:0.present = "true"
scsi0:0.fileName = "COR-XP-PRO-2_1.vmdk"
scsi0:0.mode = "independent-persistent"
scsi0:0.deviceType = "scsi-hardDisk"

vCenter Orchestrator Blog: Little big updates for our swiss-knife plug-ins
Three important vCO plug-ins have seen their first update release recently. These plug-ins are:
AMQP plug-in
HTTP-REST plug-in
SOAP plug-in
Most of the work done for those updates comes from the feedback collected from the users, through both our public communities and our Socialcast group.

vCenter Orchestrator Blog: SNMP plug-in for vCenter Orchestrator
The SNMP plug-in allows vCenter Orchestrator to connect and receive information from SNMP enabled systems and devices.
These devices could include communication equipment (routers, switches, etc.), network printers, UPS devices and many others. Events from vCenter can also be received over the SNMP protocol.
The SNMP plug-in provides two different manners of communication with the SNMP devices – queries for the values of specific SNMP variables and listening for events (SNMP traps) that are generated from the devices and pushed to the registered SNMP managers.

EXTERNAL VMWARE RELATED BLOGS (vExperts/Guest Bloggers)
I’ve been updating my vCenter and ESXi certificates recently and I ran into one particular system so far that had absolutely no documentation or KB articles to help with changing default SSL certificates for CA signed ones. The system was my vCenter Server Virtual Appliance. You might remember that I wrote about this as a means of using it as the vSphere Web Client without needing an additional Microsoft Windows License and then I used it with a load balancer to Increase vSphere Web Client Availability and Scalability. But a lack of documentation wasn’t going to stop me. Being a SLES based virtual appliance though meant things were quite different when changing the certs. If you want to save yourself a lot of time changing the SSL Certificates for the vCenter Server Virtual Appliance then read on.

Setting vCenter Alarms with PowerCLI
vCenter as of version 5.0 defines 54 default alarms that can be configured for notification. What vCenter does not provide however is a way to automatically configure all those alarms to be sent to a single email address without having to manually go into each alarm. The below PowerShell script however will take care of that. After configuring the vCenter server connection information and changing the email address, this script will setup emails that are triggered by any change in alarm state. This is a one time email per state change, however you could use the –repeat option to set repeat emails for certain states if desired.

vCloud Director infrastructure resiliency solution
This article assumes the reader has knowledge of vCloud Director, Site Recovery Manager and vSphere. It will not go in to depth on some topics, we would like to refer to the Site Recovery Manager, vCloud Director and vSphere documentation for more in-depth details around some of the concepts.

My first Auto Deploy design for real production environment
Last week I was asked by a customer to build a new VMware vSphere 5 infrastructure in which they would like to use Auto Deploy for the ESXi 5 hosts. Of course I told them that Auto Deploy was a first release but I didn’t push that too hard, because designing and deploying it for real production environments is also a challenge I hadn’t been able to take up yet. The environment consists of two sites; each site has an EMC VNX 5300 storage array which replicates to the partner. Per site we have 2 Cisco UCS blades in which 10 blades have been assigned for the VMware vSphere 5 environment. Each blade will use the converged FCoE adapter and will be presented to the ESXi hosts as two physical nics and two physical HBAs.

Unofficial VMware View PCoIP Adapter for VCOps [Video]
Not long ago I published an article entitled the Unofficial VMware View PCoIP Adapter for VCOps. This VMware View adapter provides PCoIP metrics from any VMware View environment and load them up onto vCenter Operations. If you have not had a chance to implement and play with the solution, watch the short demo below.

How to format the output of ESXCLI commands
ESXCLI commands are a comprehensive set of commands for managing most aspects of vSphere. In vSphere 5.0, this command set has been unified. Eventually, ESXCLI commands will replace other commands in the vCLI set.

VMware View Persona Management
Persona Management, previously called RTO Virtual Profiles. A sleeping giant in my eyes. It's soo simple to install and configure but can offer you riches beyond your wildest dreams. OK, maybe a little over the top, but it is a really cool product and very underrated.

Extents vs Storage DRS
I was meeting with a customer today and had to stop for a second when they said they were using 10 TB datastores in vSphere 4.1.
At first I was going through my head of maybe NFS? No they are an all block shop. Oh wait yeah, extents. They were using 2 TB -512 byte luns to create a giant Datastore. I asked, why? The answer was simple, “so we only manage one datastore.”

How-to configure PCoIP Group Policy Object in VMware View 5 video
When the default PCoIP settings are used in VMware View 5, for most situations it’s ok. But when you want to tweak the values of PCoIP settings, you will need to install and configure the PCoIP Group Policy Object (GPO) on a Domain Controler which is in charge of authentication of users and computers in the Microsoft Domain.

Auto-deploy GUI
The Auto-Deploy GUI Fling is a GUI Plugin for VMware vSphere 5. It’s enables you to use Auto Deploy feature without the need of using PowerCLI in your environment. Remember – it’s a Technology Preview License Agreement which you’re accepting when downloading this tool…

VASA and Storage Profiles
This article started off as just a bit of news. But as I went on I started to write more and more about VASA and Storage Profiles in vSphere5. So it could be of interest to someone who doesn’t even use NetApp storage…
This one kind of slipped under my radar. I’m doing some VCP prep work, and looking at VASA and Storage Profiles. It occurred to me that I hadn’t spoken to my storage partners (Dell, NetApp, EMC) for a while on this issue. I’d been so focused on SRM 5.0 last year, that I really haven’t kicked the tires on the new vSphere5 features yet…

IBM Launches the Distributed Virtual Switch 5000V
IBM System Networking Distributed Virtual Switch 5000V is a highly manageable, distributed virtual switch for VMware vSphere 5.0 Enterprise Plus environment. IBM DVS 5000V provides advanced networking features and troubleshooting features, which make it ideal for deployments in large-scale Server Virtualization and Cloud environments. The IBM DVS 5000V appears as a standard network switch, which enables network administrators to configure and manage the distributed virtual switch as a regular physical switch using familiar IBM switch user interfaces.

Virtual Infrastructure Navigator breaks when vCenter SSL Cert Changed
Like a lot of people I was quick to download and implement VMware vCenter Operations Manager 5 Enterprise when it became available. One of the great tools that is included in the suite is Virtual Infrastructure Navigator (VIN), which will discover and map all the dependencies and also DR protection status of VM’s in a linked mode group. However there is a bit of a gotcha if you want to use VIN and you also want to change the SSL Certs in vCenter and/or vSphere Web Client.

Using F5 to balance load between your vCloud Director cells
A while back Clair contacted me and asked me if I was interested in getting the info to write an article about how to setup F5’s Big IP LTM VE to front a couple of vCloud Director cells. As you know I used to be part of the VMware Cloud Practice and was responsible for architecting vCloud environments in Europe. Although I did design an environment where F5 was used I never actually was part of the team who implemented it, as it is usually the Network/Security team who takes on this part. Clair was responsible for setting this up for the VMworld Labs environment and couldn’t find many details around this on the internet, hence the reason for this article.

VDI + Windows PageFile Done Right!
Windows pagefile configuration for VDI environments has been a long standing discussion ground. I first wrote about it in 2010 (Pagefiles and VDI. Not so simple). However, because of few recent discussions I decided to review the subject and run some validation tests against well-known best practices. “The problem with best practices is that they around stay for longer than the technology they were based on.”

ESXi 5 Free – what’s the limitations?
The free version of the VMware vSphere Hypervisor – ESXi 5, has got some limitations. I know it’s been discussed on many places already, but I’m still getting questions about that and so I wanted to clear this out.
What’s the principal limitations of the ESXi 5.0 – The Free version of VMware Hypervizor?

Options for becoming a VCP 5.0
VMware's Andy Cary who works as a Senior Technical Trainer in EMEA has  received a lot of e-mails recently about what the options are for people to secure their VCP5.0. The table in the diagram below shows the 4 different options for attaining your VCP 5.0 exam. Andy thinks there's confusion with the text in printed orange, this text is only valid until the 29th February. So at the 1st March all the orange options will have disappeared from the diagram.

Jumbo Frames on vSphere 5
I read a great blog post a while ago from Jason Boche titled Jumbo Frames Comparison Testing with IP Storage and vMotion. The results of the tests showed at best marginal gains to be had from using Jumbo Frames with 1Gb/s NIC’s on ESXi 4.1. Based on reading this, and a lot of discussion that came out of PEX 2012 regarding Jumbo Frames I decided to conduct my own tests to see if the results were any different when using modern 10G switches and NIC’s. Some of the results were not what I expected.

Technical Whitepaper - Network I/O Latency on VMware vSphere 5
Network I/O latency is an important measurement, especially in latency-sensitive applications like those found in industries such as finance and trading, healthcare, transportation, and telecom (in particular, applications using Voice over IP). The end-to-end latency requirements of these applications vary from microseconds to milliseconds. And some of these applications, such as those utilizing Voice over IP, are more sensitive to jitter than end-to-end latency. So an important measurement to consider for vSphere performance in this scope is latency and jitter added due to virtualization.

How to remove orphaned vCenter Plugin
How-to remove orphaned plugin from vCenter
If you got stuck with a plugin installed in vCenter and can’t uninstall, there is a quick tutorial on how to do this. Sometimes you got stuck when testing beta products or RC versions, and your vCenter shows those broken plugins. You basically don’t have a way to uninstall those plugis from Add/remove programs. So
To remove the unwanted plug-ins from the Available Plug-ins list.
Here are the steps:

Migrating to a VDS switch when using etherchannels
Last week at PEX I had a discussion around migrating to a Distributed Switch (VDS) and some of the challenges one of our partners faced. During their migration they ran in to a lot of network problems, which made them decide to change back to a regular vSwitch. They were eager to start using the VDS but could not take the risk again to run in to the problems they faced.

Video - Cisco Nexus 1000V v1.5 Installation
The Cisco Nexus 1000V is compatible with any upstream physical access layer switch that is Ethernet standard compliant, including the Catalyst 6500 series switch, Cisco Nexus switches, and switches from other network vendors. The Cisco Nexus 1000V is compatible with any server hardware listed in the VMware Hardware Compatibility List (HCL). Cisco and VMware jointly designed APIs that produced the Cisco Nexus 1000V. The Cisco Nexus 1000V is a distributed virtual switch solution that is fully integrated within the VMware virtual infrastructure, including VMware vCenter for the virtualization administrator. This solution offloads the configuration of the virtual switch and port groups to the network administrator to enforce a consistent data center network policy. In this release Java applications are introduced for VSM and VEM installation.

How to Set CDP on a vSwitch–the #PowerCLI Way
We all know that you get CDP information in a number of ways (also PowerCLI), KB 1007069provides a number of ways to do it.
But how would you go about setting CDP on the vSwitch?
That can be done on the host itself in a number of ways:
esxcfg-vswitch –B both vSwitch0
but also with esxcli
esxcli network switch standard set –c both –v vSwitch0

PCoIP: Troubleshooting – Part 2
This is the second part of the PCoIP Troubleshooting set of post that I will be working on over the coming months. In this part I am looking at how to use the new PCoIP Log Viewer to view Real-Time/WMI PCoIP Stats.  I'll take you step-by-step through the PCoIP stats, explaining what each counter means.
To read on please use the following link: PCoIP Troubleshooting – Part 2. For those of you who many not be familiar with the Teradici PCoIP display protocol, you can find some good links here: http://www.simonlong.co.uk/blog/pcoip/

VMware Labs presents its latest fling - vBenchmark
vBenchmark is a simple application that allows you to measure key datacenter operational and efficiency metrics. Simply connect to your vCenter Server hosts and the application provides a snapshot of these metrics for your entire virtualized environment. Have you ever wondered how to quantify the benefits of virtualization to your management? If so, please consider using vBenchmark. vBenchmark measures the performance of a VMware virtualized infrastructure across three categories:
- Efficiency: for example, how much physical RAM are you saving by using virtualization?
- Operational Agility: for example, how much time do you take on average to provision a VM?
- Quality of Service: for example, how much downtime do you avoid by using availability features?
vBenchmark provides a succinct set of metrics in these categories for your VMware virtualized private cloud. Additionally, if you choose to contribute your metrics to the community repository, vBenchmark also allows you to compare your metrics against those of comparable companies in your peer group. The data you submit is anonymized and encrypted for secure  transmission.

The Ins and Outs of IOPS – learn more about it
New White paper from vKernel explains IOPS, which is not an easy topic, but you’ll get some advices at the end which are useful. What IOPS mean – In and Out Operations per Second. The discussion in this document focusing on IOPS, and how storage I/O is an often over-simplified topic.
The author is Brad Bonn from vKernel and he explains what are IOPS, where to look at the storage performance degradations, and also how to plan your storage architecture.
Links in the chain chapter explains for example the different elements which are present in the chain between the hard drive placed in the SAN device passing through the raid groups, storage controlers, LUNs etc… up to the logical drives as the visible part. So if one of those elements becomes a bottleneck, the whole chain get slower, more latency etc….

Removing the vCD Agent from hosts
When re-installing my vCD home lab I had an issue when I went to re-add some hosts which had already been used in a vCD environment, this was because the hosts had already been “prepared” by vCD and therefore had the “vcloud-agent” vib installed.  Of course you would normally unprepare these from the vCD web interface before deleting your vCD instance but I forgot to do this.

Introducing the PCoIP Configuration Utility
Chuck Hisrtius @rexremus strikes back, launching the Beta version of the PCoIP Configuration Utility. I have been testing the utility for the last couple weeks and find it very useful.

VMWARE VCAP CERTIFICATION
VCAP-DCD5 Beta Exam Experiences
Because I am VCP5 and VCAP-DCD4 I was invited to the beta exam of the VCAP-DCD5 exam. I took that exam today, so I want to blog about it right away while it is fresh in memory. I cannot go into very specific details, but I will try to give as much value without violating any exam policies.
The test is 3hours and 45minutes, but because my native language is not english I got an extra 30 minutes to complete it. So totally 4hours and 15minutes. It is a long test and I guess you will need all of the time.
The overall felling of the test was good. The questions were reasonable written. The VMware certification can be proud of it. The exam focuses on the design part of vSphere and you need to answer some technical questions, most questions were design related though.
One advice I would give to anyone who is going to take the test. You need to know  Constraints, Requirements, Risks and Assumptions. Know their definitions in your sleep. Know how to distinguish them!
Most questions are multiple choice. But you will also get some where you have to use the built in design tool to create a diagram for a specific customer case. And you will have questions where you need to fit things from row a to row b.
To prepare for the test you will need to look at the blueprint. The test is very true to the blueprint. If you are experienced with VMware it will be a big help.
Time management is a concern. The design questions and fit row a and b can easily take up some time. Use the feature to flag for later review and go back to the questions you are unsure of at the end.
I don’t know how my exam went. When doing the beta exam you will have to wait 8 weeks to find out. Hopefully I did good.
