ESXi 5.0 backwards compatibility licensing

Are you able to use ESXi 5.0 licensing for a 4.1 install, and then later upgrade to 5.0 assuming you have SnS?  Or would one have to purchase a specific license for 4.1, and then recieve a different license for 5.0 when they decide to upgrade...
