I have a question about virtual disks and how they actually read and written to the physical disks on a SAN. Lets say I have Exchange virtual server and a SQL virtual server on the same RAID set on the SAN. As you know, Exchange writes randomly to disk whereas MS SQL server writes sequential. Is each application just writing randomly and sequentially to their respective virtual disk? If so, does VMware write the same way to physical disk in respect to the way the application wrote to the virtual disk? For example, if Exchange writes randomly to disk, which is technically the virtual disk file on the ESX host, will VMware write the changes to the virtual disk file randomly on the physical disk?
