SRM test failover VM's MAC address changes

I have a weird issue that I would value some insight into.

During our Test failovers, I have one VM out of 400+ that has a different MAX address at the Recovery site.

Initially I wondered whether the source VM had had its NIC deleted and re-added after I had protected it so I removed protection and then re-protected to get SRM to copy the .vmx file again. I admit to forgetting to check prior to running the next test to see whether than MAC in the .vmx file was in fact the same as the source.  The VM is a WIndows 2k8R2 server.  In the test bubble, the VM seems to have a different virtual NIC as it has a 2 appended to the end. Which I believe is what WIndows will do if the MAC on an already exisiting NIC has changed.

Any clues as to why the VM thinks its network hardware would have changed causing windows to create another NIC ?

Thanks.
