Server 2008 R2 Hanging/freezing/bottlenecking?

Hi,

Im a student working through the Microsoft Sever 2008 Administrator Certificates and have set up a virtual domain for test and research purposes using vmware player. I have 2 domain controllers running 2008 r2 enterprise, a member server running 2008 r2 standard and a couple of clients running windows 7 ultimate. My prblem is this: My primary domain controller (DC1) hangs/freezes/bottlenecks - it will freeze for about 5-10seconds, then catch-up any commands inputted in that time, work for about 5-10seconds then repeats the process. My second domain controller (DC2) works fine, as does my member server and the clients. While the ram set on both machines is under the recommended amount for a 64bit operating system - each has 1gig allocated - again, this doesnt appear to affect DC2 which runs pretty much smoothly. The freezes happens whether I have just DC1 open or a number of virtual machines running at the same time. My host system has 8gig of ram, so I dont feel there is a problem there. I have tried defragmenting the virtual hdd and the actual hdd (a seperate drive from my system files) which didnt affect it at all.

It's driving me nuts trying to work on it!

Does anyone know of anything I can try to allieviate this?
