VMware Community Forums User Moderators

VMware Community user moderators have committed to perform certain functions, as authorized by the VMware Community team. Often, user  moderators will confer with the VMware Community team and vice versa, to ensure fair and appropriate decisions.

Role of user moderators

Here is a summary of what user moderators' role is in the VMware Community. Please refer to VMware Community Moderator Guidelines for details on the rules the user moderators have to play by.

Keep discussion threads and help documents clean and on-topic.

This includes:

• Move misplaced postings to the appropriate Forum.
• Find and remove threads/topics irrelevant to virtualization or VMware.
• Remove duplicate postings.
• Point participants to appropriate documents if they are opening a thread on a topic already covered in the FAQs.
• Edit new discussion subject lines to remove any markup that would artificially draw attention to those particular threads.

Enforce the VMware Community Terms of Use, and dealing appropriately with the occasional case of member misconduct. Examples of no-no's in VMware Community:

• Moderator bashing or baiting (publicly challenging moderation decisions).
• Spam and certain kinds of promotion.
• Swearing, profanity.
• Inflammatory remarks including personal insults. Spirited debates are welcome; flaming will not be tolerated.
• Illegal postings such as sharing software serial numbers for all to see.
• Malicious postings such as linking to content, applications, or  utilities containing viruses, trojans, or spyware; linking to or mention  of serial number generators.
• Monitoring patterns of bad behavior.

Take user comments and ensure attention is being paid to critical requests.

Help facilitate in technical discussions, and keep FAQ information in the product forums up to date.

Moderator Service Terms and Elections

Moderators are elected on a semi-annual basis. The service terms run from January 1 through May 31, and from June 1 through December 31 of each year.

The elections take place in November and May for the following term. During the election month, the list of candidates is presented to the current moderators and each candidate has to be confirmed unanimously. Any current community moderator can veto a candidate.

The election month is also the time when active moderators get to choose whether they would like to stay on for another six-months term or would like to take a break. Failure to reaffirm the desire/ability to continue to serve as community moderator will result in retirement.
