Hello,
My computer is a Dell Laptop (Studio XPS 16) with 6 GB memory and Vista 64 bits.
Since november 2008, I use WMWare Workstation 6.x with a Windows 2003 Server 32 bits VM (currently, I use the latest 6.5.5 version).
There are 3 GB of memory allocated for my VM. My two virtual disks use about 50 GB on my disk.
There are no quotas on my disk and more than 30 GB free space.
Until last wednesday included, all worked fine.
Starting thursday morning, when I tried to start my VM, I got the message "Failed to read: Insufficient quota to complete the requested service (1453)" with the options to retry, abort or continue.
Of course, I first tried to retry then continue without success, and finally choose abort.
The log message is more complete : "Retry on read "F:\WebBODev\WebBO Development.vmdk" : Insufficient quota to complete the requested service", but inadequate, because I have no active quotas on my disk.
Until now, I tried all the following actions :
- I replaced my VM files by a backuped copy -> same message
- I defragmented the 600,000+ chunks of my two VM virtual drives (the two partitions embedded file systems are automatically defragmented once a day) -> same message
- I reinstalled my 6.5 version -> same message
- I copied my VM files on an external drive and tried to launch it from this drive -> same message
- I upgraded to the 7.1 version (I bought the upgrade in 2009 but never installed it) -> the VM started (!), but is was so slow (90-100% CPU without any activity) that is was unusable
- I completely uninstalled the 7.1 version and reinstalled the 6.5 version -> same message
- Looking for some help on the Net (but there is very few), I decreased the VM allocated memory -> same message, until I reached the size of 1,28 GB.
- I opened my laptop back and uninstalled then reinstalled the memory modules before trying again with a higher allocated memory -> same message
- I ran a three hours Dell diagnostic on the laptop memory modules -> all tests passed
So, I have now a working VM, but slowly because with far less memory than before.
My system has enough memory, enough disk space, no quotas...
What can be the reason of my suddenly appeared problem and what can I do to fix it ?
Thanks.
PS : For the VMWare staff, I attach a zip with the log and dump files.
