Can VM be used to serve INTRANET WebApp?

A small Non-Profit Club has a custom Mysql web app running under an old version of Ubuntu ... the no brand hardware is 10+ years old and the person(s) that set up this app are no longer around.

The app is crucial to the clubs operation and we don't have the resource to replace this application ... the concern is if the hardware fails we are SOL.

The os and or app appear to crash if moved into newer hardware

I am trying to determine a path of least resistance by:

1) try the existing os/app in a VM

However if one were to create an ISO image of the OS/APP and drop this into a VMware Player VM  (assumming it runs when loaded) , would this app even be accessible by local intranet traffic? The current machine has a Static IP address on the network so not sure how this would play out in a virtual machine ... the PC hosting the VM could have a static address but the VM Player appears to use separate network connections; VMnet1 and VMnet8 with totally unrelated  IP addresses ... if this is even possible what address and or address:port would a client need to use to access the VM?

2) investigate why new hardware is not working with existing config

3) try loading app in latest version of UBUNTU
