NIC Configuration Not showing on Guest OS

Hello All,

I have a Win Server 2K3 guest on a ESXi 4.1 host.  Everything seems to be working fine, except I am having trouble with NIC settings in the guest OS.

Here's a brief recap:

The VM needs to have 2 nics.  One connects to our LAN and the other connects to a VLAN i have set up for printing.  The host is an HP DL 380 G7 with 4 on board NICS (NC382i).  I have made 2 of the physical NICS available as PCI devices and assigned them to this VM.  I configured the IP address on one of the NICs to talk to our public LAN segment.  It works fine.  I can get out to the Internet and ping devices on our LAN and beyond.  I can also ping this VM from our LAN.  So all is working as it should be.

However, when I look at the TCP/IP configuration of the NIC it shows as being set for DHCP, not for a specific IP address.  What I mean is that I can't see the IP settings on the NIC.  I set the IP address, Gateway, DNS and all of that and then stop and restart the VM.  When I then open up the properties of the NIC it shows as the default config (basically set up for DHCP).  The NIC is definitely configured with the correct address, but I can't see it.  When I do an IPCONFIG /All I get the correct info.

My question is whether or not this is correct behavior or is there some setting I need to set when using a physical NIC in a VM?  I am afraid that this situation will lead to confusion on the part of anyone trying to maintain or troubleshoot that virtual machine.

I have included a screen shot of the NIC properties as I see them in the VM.  As you notice, it looks like there is no config on the NIC, but there definitely is.

Thanks,

John
