Windows Security Issues After Physical-to-Virtual Conversion

Greetings,

We're operating in an environment where we've already setup & converted a number of virtual servers. However, we've run into a very odd issue with one server. The server is a Windows Server 2008 Standard x64, and was originally a physical server that acted both as a Backup Domain Controller, and a File Server. Before the conversion, we demoted it from its Backup Domain Controller role so that it was strictly a file server. It was converted over to an ESXi 4.1 host.

After the first conversion, we ran into an issue where the drive which stored the shared data had all the correct security, share, ownership, etc. permissions maintained, however users could no longer access the shares, getting an "access denied" error. Resetting all permissions and access was ineffective.

We scrapped that attempt, and a week later tried again. What we ended up doing was converting the server over, minus the data drive, then creating a new virtual hard disk, and do a "Restore" from the backup to the virtual disk. It worked great, and everyone could access everything properly. Rebooted the server to be sure.

However, after over a week of working fine, and a reboot of the VM, and the issue returned where access to the data was suddenly disallowed.  We found a very strange work-around where if a user was set as a Local Admin on the file server, they could then access the shares over the network. Now, the local admin has absolutely no security permission settings on any of these files & folders (only domain security groups & domain admins, of which the local admin belongs to none), so the issue didn't appear to be related specifically to file/folder permissions, but to something that changed in the conversion.

Has anyone run into a similar issue, and may be able to recommend a course of action?

Thank you,
