virtual machine keeps getting corrupted

I'm new with VMware. I'm using Workstation 8.0.1 running on a new Windows 7-64 bit machine with 16GB RAM. Four times I have created a virtual machine from a physical XP workstation, had it come up and work for a while, then it fails to start. Each time I've created a new virtual machine with less software in it (by removing it from the physical workstation several items that cause Windows errors -- sound card, etc.).

This latest creation I was able to work with yesterday, removing unneeded programs, rebooting, etc., several times. Today the virtual machine won't start. This is the same problem I've had the previous 3 times. So something isn't working properly.

To close sessions, I am shutting down Windows from the virtual machine, waiting for it to close. VMWare tools has been installed on the virtual machine. It's a single drive that's 80% full, I haven't really done anything other than launch software to make sure it works, and everything seems ok. But then it won't start.

I've attached a screenshot of the error message. Starting is Windows Safe Mode doesn't do any better.

I ran the disk repair utility:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation\vmware-vdiskmanager" -R "D:\VMWare\tekhelps30duo4\tekhelps30duo4.vmdk"

and I get the message "No errors were found on the virtual disk."

Any ideas about what's causing this behavior much appreciated.
