How to create shared disk across VMs on different hosts

Hi,

We are setting up Oracle RAC on two VMs, one on each of two hosts for redundancy. For our setup:

  • The two ESXi hosts both have SAN access to a LUN.
  • The two VMs on the hosts need to have access to a single virtual disk on that LUN (or the LUN itself) simultaneously.

We have tried the following:

  • Creating a datastore associated with the LUN, then creating a new hard disk on each VM using the same virtual disk on the datastore. This fails because once one VM is running, the other VM cannot run since the first one has a lock on the disk file.
  • Creating a new hard disk on the VM using RDM. This fails because only the first VM has this disk option. Once the RDM has been assigned for the LUN, the other VM cannot create its own RDM for the LUN.

I’m just learning VMware, so I may be missing a basic way to accomplish this, or maybe it’s not possible at all. Do you know any way to create the setup I’ve described?
