We have 2 x ESX 3.5 servers running 20 odd VM's with HA and VMotion and I have just added an APC UPS with network management card and installed PCNS version 2.2.3 on my 2 ESX servers. All is well and the installation went without a hitch, but I have a question about how the shutdown process will work.
Obviously what I want to happen is that when a power-out is detected, the VM's are shut down cleanly first, then the ESX servers themselves are taken down cleanly to a shut down state. I have enabled "Virtual Machine Startup and Shutdown" under the Configuration section of each ESX host and configured PCNS to shutdown the ESX servers. Is it as simple as that? How does the ESX server know to wait until all the VM's are shutdown before it shuts itself down?
Finally, does this all work OK in an HA environment? Does the ESX server need to go into maintenance mode before it shuts down?
